MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE
-
ThyssenKrupp Elevator demands more from our leaders than just business results; we insist that they focus on the values that drive our culture: integrity, environment, people, safety and sustainability.
- Since 2008, we have made great strides to formalize sustainable business policies and procedures. We have set targets on key sustainability indicators, integrated sustainability principles into product design and technology innovation processes and rolled out company-wide sustainability awareness training. We view our environmental and social performance data as indicators of our decision-making processes, striving toward a new and better way of enhancing our profitability.
Our sustainability management structure has evolved as well. We began our journey in 2008 with the formation of an Executive Sustainability Committee that oversaw a comprehensive corporate social responsibility (CSR) gap assessment of ThyssenKrupp Elevator’s social, environmental, and governance programs and initiatives. The Committee initiated life cycle assessments of our elevator products, a company-wide sustainability assessment and the Company’s first sustainability report. Furthermore, our Corporate Sustainability Manager, Sasha Bailey, became our first LEED® Accredited Professional and actively engaged our entire sales force on how green building and sustainability principles influence our business and our customers.
To strengthen our ongoing commitment to sustainability, ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas hired Brad Nemeth as its Director of Sustainability in 2009. As Director, Nemeth is tasked with identifying risks and opportunities related to sustainability, including climate change. Together, the Director of Sustainability and the Corporate Sustainability Manager oversee the Company’s four areas of sustainability—people, product, planet and profit.
The Director of Sustainability now serves on the ThyssenKrupp Elevators AG’s Sustainable Efficiency Global Team that meets quarterly to guide our efforts, empower our people, and spur change throughout the Company. Throughout this report, we will highlight sustainability initiatives including the development of an easy to use energy calculator for our customers and the formation of Efficiency-Improvement Workgroups—these groups include members from every segment of the Company. Supported by the regional and manufacturing presidents, the workgroups are charged with brainstorming ideas—big and small—that will help our Company be more efficient.
In addition to the team members and committees already mentioned, there are other dedicated groups of ThyssenKrupp Elevator champions that work hard to support sustainability:
Green Team
Employees from every division at ThyssenKrupp Elevator make up this team of sustainability champions. The Green Team has one representative in each location throughout the United States (approximately 130 people) and they are accountable for spearheading sustainability initiatives and providing data and success stories to the Manager of Sustainability. The team’s efforts help with all reporting and communications processes.
Executive Sustainability Committee
Although ThyssenKrupp Elevator does not have a board or executive body with overall responsibility for climate change specifically—that responsibility is held by ThyssenKrupp AG’s executive board—this Committee has global, non-board member participation and helps fine-tune strategies and set goals for final approval by the executive board. The Committee is also involved in making decisions around HS&E systems and products focused on energy reduction or materials reduction.
Make It Simple (MIS) Representatives
Our "Make It Simple" program focuses on operational effectiveness, continuous improvement, innovation and design, and asset optimization. Many of our sustainability goals align with initiatives already established within the "Make It Simple" program and we use MIS metrics to track progress. "Make It Simple" program initiatives include packaging redesign, utility reduction, employee development and safety training.
Global Elevator Chief Sustainability Officer
Providing direction from our headquarters in Germany, ThyssenKrupp Elevator’s Global Sustainability Officer is charged with consolidating all of our operating units sustainability efforts into a cohesive global plan to leverage our internal strengths and best practices.
ThyssenKrupp AG Board Member, Sustainability
The appointment of an AG Board Member to focus on and oversee the Company’s sustainability efforts reinforces ThyssenKrupp’s commitment to the environment and corporate responsibility. The creation of this position demonstrates that the CSR mindset is a strategic element that is embedded into every objective and initiative of the Company.
