WORKPLACE SAFETY

  • Our commitment to health and safety has always been paramount to our operations and overall business strategy.

  • In keeping with that commitment we assess our employee’s work environments through the lens of sustainability. This led to cleaner, brighter work areas, products free of added-urea-formaldehyde, powder coating in lieu of solvent-based interior paints and subsequent reduction in VOC levels in our manufacturing process, in-house water treatment and water conservation programs.

The safety of our employees, products, and facilities is of utmost importance to the operations of our entire Company. We expect every ThyssenKrupp Elevator employee to work safely every day and to go home to their loved ones each night. To ensure this happens, we firmly subscribe to the basic safety principles described below, which are implemented through our Health and Safety Management System:

  • Believe that ALL accidents are preventable;
  • Educate everyone to work safely and effectively;
  • Empower everyone to anticipate hazards and maintain a safe work environment at our job sites.

Health and Safety Management System

Our Company’s health and safety management system was designed to provide clear direction for establishing a safety regime within ThyssenKrupp Elevator. Each region in the United States has a regional safety person who is responsible for measuring, monitoring and reviewing the health and safety performance of workers and operations. In addition, ThyssenKrupp Elevator distributes a safety manual to all field employees that is revised every three years, and performs a number of safety audits to monitor and enforce our safety policies.

Health and Safety Guidelines

In addition to our safety principles, the following guidelines on occupational safety and health have been agreed on by the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG and the Group Works Council:

T
  • The health and safety of our employees at work are of prime importance and make a key contribution to the Company’s success. As such, they are a corporate objective of equal standing with the quality of our products and commercial success.
T
  • Executive boards, management boards, the Group Works Council, and all employee representative bodies pursue occupational safety and health protection goals jointly.
T
  • Occupational health and safety maintains and strengthens the performance capabilities and motivation of our employees.
T
  • Occupational health and safety protection are an integral part of all Company operations and are included from the outset — starting in the planning phase — in all technical, economic and social considerations. All relevant laws, ordinances, rules, and associated operational regulations are complied with.
T
  • Prevention, the taking of forward measures to maintain the health and safety of employees, is a high priority in our Company; the focus here is on continuous improvement in occupational health and safety protection.
T
  • Managers are role models and must perform their duties responsibly. Occupational health and safety is a management task.
T
  • Successful occupational health and safety protection are dependent on the involvement and cooperation of all employees.
T
  • The same safety standards for ThyssenKrupp employees apply to employees of outside firms. This is taken into account in selecting and working with outside firms.
T
  • Non-compliance with basic occupational safety regulations may lead to corresponding consequences for managers, employees, and outside firms.

Safety Records and Targets

T
  • The U.S. accident frequency rate for FY 2010 was 1.9, which improved from our FY 2008 accident frequency rate of 3.8.
T
  • The construction industry frequency rate for all ThyssenKrupp Elevator units — from corporate offices to the manufacturing floor to the field — is 4.8. This is less than the industry standard rate. Given that we are continuously working toward an ultimate target of zero accidents, we are confident that our current target of 2.5 will decrease over time as our safety record improves.

NOTE: ThyssenKrupp Elevator’s accident frequency rate is a measure of accidents per hours worked as developed by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). To calculate the annual frequency rate for a particular branch, the number of accidents per year is multiplied by 200,000 (representing 100 employees working 40 hours a week for 50 weeks) and then divided by the total hours worked at that branch.

In Memoriam: At ThyssenKrupp Elevator, we believe in putting the safety of our employees and our riders first. Even with this diligent focus, we are sometimes faced with tragedy, In December of 2008, ThyssenKrupp Elevator lost a valued employee in a installation accident. With heavy hearts and serious consideration, we have taken this tragic experience and used it to better our programs and safety initiatives. ThyssenKrupp Elevator cares for each and every employee and their families.

ThyssenKrupp Elevator’s public policies demonstrate our commitment to our employees. Those policies include: Anti-Corruption, Anti-Trust Laws, Corporate Compliance, Harassment Policy, Business Code of Conduct, Occupational Safety and Health and At Will Employment.
